Manifold – A fundamental element of heating systems

The distributor-collector is an essential component in modern heating systems, ensuring that the heating water produced by the heat generator ( boiler , heat pump ) is efficiently distributed between the various heating circuits and heat emitters. This element of the system allows for the balancing and precise control of the various circuits, contributing to the optimal operation of the heating system.


The role and operation of the splitter-collector


Heating water distribution: The distributor-collector receives the incoming heating water from the heat generator and then distributes it between the heating circuits (e.g. underfloor heating, radiators). The water cooled by the heat emitters on the return branch is returned to the heat generator through the collector.

Hydraulic balancing: To control the flow between circuits of different sizes and heat loads, the manifold allows for precise balancing of each circuit. This prevents some circuits from overheating or falling short in heat output.

Flow measurement and control: Flow meter manifolds allow for precise measurement and control of the amount of water flowing in each circuit, which is especially important for larger systems. Valve manifolds allow for manual or automatic control of each circuit.

Types of splitters and collectors


Simple manifolds: Versions with basic functionality that allow manual control.

Flow meter manifolds: They have built-in flow meters that allow you to precisely adjust the water flow of each circuit.

Valved manifolds: They are equipped with valves that allow the circuits to be disconnected or their flow to be limited.

Automated manifolds: Compatible with motorized valves and central control units, providing automated control when connected to, for example, thermostats .

Advantages of the splitter-collector


System balancing: With the help of the manifold, each heating circuit receives the required amount of heat, thus improving the energy efficiency of the system.

Accuracy and controllability: Flow meters and valves allow fine-tuning of individual circuits, which increases comfort and reduces energy consumption.

Space saving: The manifold centralizes the heating system connections, simplifying piping and installation.

Flexibility: Different types of heat emitters (e.g. underfloor heating, radiators) can be easily connected to the same heat generator.



Installation considerations

Selecting a location: The distributor-collector should be installed in a location that is easily accessible for adjustments and maintenance.

Hydraulic balancing: Hydraulic balancing of all heating circuits is necessary for efficient operation, especially in larger systems.

Compatibility: The manifold must be coordinated with the heat generator, the size of the pipes and the type of system (e.g. low-temperature underfloor heating).
