Heat pump efficiency

Efficiency (or coefficient of performance) is one of the most important characteristics of heat pumps, as it indicates how effectively the system can transfer heat from the source to the destination. An efficient heat pump uses less energy to produce the desired amount of heat, resulting in lower operating costs and a smaller environmental footprint.

How is heat pump efficiency measured?

COP (Coefficient of Performance): COP is the performance coefficient of a heat pump, which is the ratio of the useful heat energy delivered (output energy) to the electrical energy consumed for operation (input energy).

Example: If the heat pump produces 4 kWh of heat using 1 kWh of electricity, the COP value is 4.

SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance): SCOP indicates the average annual efficiency, taking into account seasonal variations and operating conditions. This provides a more accurate picture of the system's long-term performance.

EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio): Indicates cooling performance, based on a similar principle to COP.

What influences heat pump efficiency?

Heat pump type:

  • Air-to-water heat pump: Extracts heat from the air; its efficiency depends on the outside temperature.
  • Ground-source heat pump: Heat from the ground is a more stable source, thus generally providing higher efficiency.
  • Water-to-water heat pump: Heat extracted from water is very efficient, but its installation is site-specific.

Operating temperature: System efficiency may decrease under extreme cold conditions.

Heat exchanger type and condition: Clean, appropriately sized, and efficient heat exchangers increase efficiency.

Refrigerant properties: The performance of the system depends on the type and efficiency of the refrigerant used.

Installation conditions: Correct system installation, appropriate pipe length, and insulation are critical for efficiency.

Example COP value comparison

Heat pump type Outside temperature (°C) COP value
Air-to-water +7 4
Air-to-water -7 2
Ground-source +10 5
Water-to-water +10 6

Advantages of heat pump efficiency

Cost savings:
High-efficiency heat pumps use less electricity, reducing operating costs.

Environmentally friendly operation: Lower energy consumption results in lower carbon dioxide emissions.

Longer lifespan: Efficient operation reduces system wear and tear, increasing its lifespan.

Grants and incentives: Systems with high COP and SCOP values are often eligible for government grants and incentives.

Summary

Heat pump efficiency is crucial for economical and sustainable operation. Proper sizing, maintenance, and optimization of installation conditions can increase system performance and reduce costs. Metrics such as COP and SCOP help provide an accurate picture of system efficiency, leading to long-term savings and environmentally friendly operation.
